Organization. Not Perfection.

Redefine what "perfect" is going to be for you and your space.

I have helped clients with organizing all kinds of different spaces, and realized that many share a common thread: their picture of organization = perfection. So let me ease your mind. Your space is not supposed to be someone else's picture of perfection you have read about, or seen, on social media, magazines and television with matching everything. You know why? Because that kind of perfection is not right for YOU. You will drive yourself crazy trying to fit into someone else’s definition, or vision, of organization. You will also drive yourself mad (and everyone else around you) trying to maintain it. It’s about getting it “perfect” for you, your life, your space, and your family. Your organized space should look and feel like YOU!

So here are a few points to remember when going through the organizing process.

  • Look at your space. Look at all the details from top to bottom; side to side. Are there any details that you like? want to hide? don’t know what to do with?

  • Think about how you (and your family) live in the space or spaces. Take notes to better help you along.

  • Get the rest of the household involved. Ask your spouse, partner, kids, and dog (LOL) what they would like, or imagine, in the space. Depending on the ages of the children, you may want to ask them questions with 2 choices you have pre-determined to make it easier for them because ultimately it’s all up to you.

  • Be flexible. Understand that any decisions you make on paper, or in your mind, about what and how you would like a space organized is not set in stone. At some point in the process of organizing you may change your mind, or a new idea may enter your mind, and that’s okay.

  • Don’t buy anything. Wait until you have completed decluttering and organizing. This way you will know what you need, which in turn, will save you time and money.

  • It takes more time. Understand that what you see on tv and online took a team of people and a certain budget (cha-ching) to get it done within a small timeframe. Plus, the maintenance of these organized spaces take more time away from more important aspects of your life if it doesn't match your lifestyle.
